Mikoko Pamoja.
The world's first community-led blue carbon project. Based in Gazi Bay, Kenya, Mikoko Pamoja is a global blueprint for how coastal ecosystems can be restored while delivering transformative social outcomes.
Ecological Sequestration
The Gazi Bay mangrove forest is a critical carbon sink, storing over 3,000 tonnes of carbon per hectare—90% of which is sequestered in the anaerobic soils. By protecting 107 hectares and restoring an additional 10 hectares, Mikoko Pamoja prevents the release of centuries of stored atmospheric carbon.
Community Ownership
Managed by the Mikoko Pamoja Community Organization (MPCO), 100% of carbon revenues flow back to Gazi and Makongeni residents. This funding has transformed the region by building schools, providing clean water kiosks, and creating a sustainable circular economy around conservation.
Real-Time Monitoring
[2025-12-10] Sentinel-2 pass: 0% leakage detected.
[2025-11-28] Ground truth sync: Biomass gain +1.2%.
Hydrological Integrity
Project area maintains ideal salinity and tidal flow conditions, ensuring long-term survival and maximized carbon burial rates.
