Tana Delta
Mangroves.
Conservation efforts in the Tana River Delta, one of Kenya's most important wetlands, focusing on the protection of extensive mangrove forests and the unique biodiversity they support.
Seeking conservation partners and scientific advisors.
A Critical Wetland
The Tana River Delta is Kenya's largest estuarine system and one of East Africa's most important wetlands. It is a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) and an Important Bird Area, hosting over 350 bird species including several globally threatened species.
Conservation Focus
Unlike our restoration-focused projects, the Tana Delta initiative is primarily about conservation—preventing the degradation of existing mangrove forests and the release of their stored carbon. This 'avoided deforestation' model is critical for high-carbon-stock ecosystems.
Development Timeline
Community Partnership
This project requires deep collaboration with the Pokomo and Orma communities who depend on the delta's resources. Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a non-negotiable requirement.
Biodiversity Hotspot
The Tana Delta is home to the critically endangered Tana River Red Colobus monkey, found nowhere else on Earth. Protecting this ecosystem is as much about biodiversity as carbon.
